Every year during the second week of the new seminary year the fifth and sixth years attend the 4-day Celibacy Seminar at Pallotti College in Millgrove. Pallotti College is located in the heart of the Yarra Ranges. A place with spectacular views ideal for reflection, dialectic and contemplative exercises.
Rev Dr Hoa Dinh comes back to facilitate this year’s retreat. He brings a wealth of knowledge as a medical doctor prior to becoming a Jesuit priest and lecturer at the Catholic Theological College.
We explored numerous important inter-related topics in human spirituality, psychology and biology. We also explored various practical ways to maintain a balanced and healthy spirit, mind and body through prayer, self-knowledge and self-care. For some people these things might be New Year resolutions but for many of us training to becoming priests and good authentic men, it is a lifelong commitment.
One thing I took from the retreat is the importance of a better understanding of ‘self’. Through a deeper understanding of oneself, one could cope, manage and handle difficult life situations responsibly. It also allows us to help our neighbour to express their potential in different ways.
All of us benefited from the seminar immensely. It was the perfect preparation for the heavy load of academic and community commitments as reflected in our calendar for 2019. Despite the busy year ahead, I look forward to moments of joy, sorrow and laughter all of which brings me closer to God.
