Welcoming Family and Friends

By Anthony Wright

What is the one antidote to late-night philosophy classes you ask? Well, it’s Family and Friends Day of Course. The 26th of March was an incredible day featuring scrumptious food, beautiful music and delightful company. To begin with, the 11:30 mass welcomed over 100 friends and family members to the College. The solemn liturgy was an appropriate way to introduce our guests to the College, being the crucial event of our week. For many visitors, it was the first time they were able to see the College and also attend mass in the stunning Sacred Heart Church.

It was also a wonderful opportunity for many to see Fr Cameron Forbes in action. As the principal celebrant Fr Forbes gave a wonderful and challenging homily, encouraging all of us to reflect on the deep and profound love of Jesus and the necessary sacrifices we must make if we want to follow him.

The day continued with a customary level of organised chaos as different friends and families set up a broad picnic lunch. It was heart-warming to see so much joy and comradery amongst the whole community and is a testimony to the generosity and hospitality of all who are associated with the seminarians. One particular highlight was the incredible display of food which was generously shared by those that prepared it. The eclectic menu was a feast that ticked off the full gamut of culinary experiences, featuring cuisines from Vietnam, Iraq, Croatia and more.

“How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity.” (Psalm 133:1)

Days such as these are an invaluable part of seminary life. They remind us of the deep care and support offered by so many good people throughout Melbourne and beyond. Both through physical support and perhaps especially through their prayers we are assured of God’s continual encouragement of us in pursuing our vocations. It is also a wonderful opportunity for us to offer the faithful a taste of seminary life and thus encourage them also to remain steadfast in their support.
